Docent Council Board Overview
The purpose of the Docent Council (DC) is to provide trained docents who give tours of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s (FAMSF) collections and special exhibitions and who provide appropriate services to the Museums in cooperation with the FAMSF Education Department and in accordance with the Museums’ Mission Statement. The DC Board is the governing body of the DC. The DC Coordinator, the conduit of the DC to/from the Museums, is on the staff of FAMSF Education Department.
The DC is the primary volunteer organization at FAMSF that supports museum education of the public. The DC Board supports this mission through a variety of tours: general tours, school tours, access tours for visitors with disabilities and special exhibition tours. The DC Board also provides docent lectures and other educational opportunities for the public both within and outside the museum in communities in the Bay Area. Docents provide a significant level of professionalism in their tours and are highly trained. The DC Board supports docents in their tours through communication, technology and educational resources. The DC Board is governed by an elected Executive Committee of five officers.
